Tennis Beyond the Court: Spotlight on Julius Mashonganyika, 2024 Tennis in the Classroom Award Winner

The Mid-Atlantic tennis community is filled with inspiring individuals and organizations making a profound impact on the sport. Each year, USTA Mid-Atlantic Foundation celebrates these tennis champions through our Annual Awards program, recognizing those who go above and beyond to grow and enhance the game in the region.

In 2024, we continue to honor individuals and community providers who embody our core values of Community, Character, and Well-being as part of the “USTA Mid-Atlantic Creates” theme. Their dedication is shaping the future of tennis, and their contributions to the sport have touched countless lives across the region.

This year, many nominations were submitted, each showcasing remarkable stories of leadership, passion, and commitment. After a thorough selection process, USTA Mid-Atlantic Foundation proudly introduces the 2024 Mid-Atlantic Creates Award winners, individuals and organizations whose positive influence extends far beyond the court.

Julius Mashonganyika’s tennis journey began on the courts of Harare, Zimbabwe, and has blossomed into a lifelong mission to empower others through the sport. As the 2024 Tennis in the Classroom Award recipient at the Tennis Creates Awards, Julius exemplifies how passion, service, and education intersect to create lasting community impact. From a promising young player to an elite coach and mentor, his story is a testament to the power of tennis as a tool for growth—both on and off the court.

A Tennis Journey Rooted in Zimbabwean Heritage

Julius first picked up a tennis racket at the age of 10 at the Mufakose Tennis Coaching Agency in Harare. The path was not always easy, but his dedication propelled him through the ranks.  As a high school captain, national junior tournament competitor, and later as an assistant coach at Mufakose Tennis Club, Julius played a pivotal role in shaping Zimbabwe’s tennis community.

Notably, in 1991, his club made history by becoming the first all-Black team to compete in the premier tennis league in Harare. His connection to Zimbabwe’s golden era of tennis is deep; four of his teammates at Mufakose went on to represent the country in the Davis Cup, further inspiring his dreams.

“I’ve been lucky to witness the impact tennis can have on young people,” Julius reflects. “The sport teaches discipline, mental strength, and coping mechanisms for stress—life skills that extend well beyond the court.”

From Player to Mentor: The Coaching Journey

Julius’s passion for coaching began in 1995 when he took on a development coach role with Tennis Zimbabwe. Since then, he has worn many hats: Tennis Director at White Rhinos Tennis Club in Harare, High-Performance Coach at Champs Tennis Academy in Cape Town, and mentor to aspiring players across three continents.

His extensive credentials include certifications from top tennis organizations like the USPTA, PTR, and ITF. Today, as a USPTA Elite Tennis Professional and USTA High-Performance Coach, Julius’s expertise spans from grassroots development to competitive player coaching. “Coaching allows me to stay connected with the community,” Julius says. “It’s all about the people—helping them grow through the game I love.”

Creating Impact Through High School Tennis and Community Outreach

One of Julius’s standout achievements is his work with high school tennis teams in Virginia. As the Head Varsity Boys Tennis Coach at Meridian High School, he led the team to victory in the Virginia High School Tennis League. Under his guidance, the boys’ team captured the 2023-24 Regional Finals title and advanced to the State Quarterfinals—a historic feat for the program.

Beyond competitive success, Julius’s heart lies in service. His commitment to the USTA Mid-Atlantic Red Ball Program, which introduces tennis to young children, ensures the future of the sport and its accessibility to everyone. Additionally, his free clinics and summer camps across Maryland, Virginia, and the Washington, D.C. area provide opportunities for underserved communities to experience the joy of tennis.

A Champion of Inclusion and Diversity

Julius’s work extends beyond the courts through his involvement with the USTA’s Diversity and Inclusion initiatives. He served on the USTA Diversity and Inclusion Committee during the 2021-22 term and is currently a member of the USTA Public Parks Committee. His efforts champion the idea that tennis is for everyone, regardless of background or ability.

“Tennis demonstrates love,” Julius says. “It’s a lifetime sport that teaches not just skills, but values. My first mentor, Mr. Albert Nhamoyebonde, taught me the importance of giving back and fostering inclusivity in the game.”

A Well-Deserved Honor: Tennis in the Classroom Award

Julius’s recognition as the Tennis in the Classroom honoree reflects his deep-rooted commitment to education and tennis. His ability to inspire young athletes, guide competitive teams, and uplift communities through service sets him apart. The award also recognizes his work fostering a love for tennis among the next generation and his tireless dedication to growing the sport.

In 2023, Julius was honored with the USPTA Mid-Atlantic Division Star Award, further cementing his legacy as a beacon of excellence in tennis coaching. His philosophy of using tennis to build strong minds and resilient spirits continues to leave a lasting impact on everyone he teaches.

The Legacy of Julius Mashonganyika

When asked why people should try tennis, Julius’s response is simple yet profound: “Tennis is a sport for life—it’s for everybody.” Whether through coaching at a high school, mentoring at summer camps, or volunteering for community programs, Julius is a living embodiment of this belief. He doesn’t just teach tennis; he teaches life lessons, inspiring athletes of all ages to unlock their full potential.

As the Tennis in the Classroom Honoree, Julius Mashonganyika exemplifies what it means to be more than a coach—he is a mentor, a role model, and a driving force for change. His journey from Zimbabwe to the United States showcases the transformative power of tennis, and his work ensures that the sport will continue to inspire generations to come.

Congratulations to Julius on this well-deserved honor. His story reminds us that tennis is not just a game; it is a lifelong journey of growth, service, and connection.

Congratulations to all the 2024 USTA Mid-Atlantic award winners! USTA Mid-Atlantic Foundation Raises $13,000 for Junior Player Scholarships

Ben Solomon/Mubadala Citi DC Open

Congratulations to Cathy Porter and Eleanor McManus for being our 2024 Summer Smash Challenge Winners! Together, they formed a fundraising team to raise money for Junior Player Scholarships, which will benefit 89 recipients this year in the Mid-Atlantic.

With the help of our Summer Smash matching donors, Chris Gilman and Scott Hulsey, the USTA Mid-Atlantic Foundation raised $13,000, which will help junior tennis players offset costs associated with playing tennis such as equipment, lessons, and entry fees. These scholarships have supported players like Jaelynn Perez, who used the scholarship to help pay for tennis lessons and equipment and reached the finals in her first tennis tournament.

The Summer Smash Challenge is an annual fundraising campaign where individuals form teams to compete to raise the most funds for youth tennis scholarships. The check was presented during the Mubadala Citi DC Open on July 31, 2024, at Rock Creek Park. Tynika Wilson, USTA Mid-Atlantic Foundation’s USTA Delegate, accepted the check on behalf of USTA Mid-Atlantic. We also want to take the time to say thank you to Tennis Topia and Pickleball and our matching donors for helping grow youth tennis in the Mid-Atlantic community!

How You Can Give to Grow Tennis this Summer!

Kids want to play tennis and all we have to do is put them on a path to get into the game. But sometimes, things get in the way. The cost of lessons or tennis summer camp fees, or even equipment can be more than some can afford. This is why we fundraise!

Your support helps youth players in need access the benefits of tennis. By contributing, you ensure all children have equal opportunities to enjoy the physical, social, and emotional advantages of playing tennis.

All children deserve to play tennis and scholarships from USTA Mid-Atlantic Foundation make it so more youth can get into and stay in the sport.

Join USTA Mid-Atlantic Foundation and support the Summer Smash challenge. This year all money raised in the challenge will fund scholarships for youth tennis players.

And we need you now more than ever.

The 2024 spring Junior Player Scholarship application period saw an incredible 40% increase since 2023. We’ve received more applications than ever before. We will exhaust all of our scholarship funding in this first round of applications. But so many more kids need help and need to be able to play tennis!

Tennis continues to be an outlet for kids to get involved, make friends, and be active.  This year’s Summer Smash challenge will directly fund our Junior Player Scholarship so that  youth tennis players can gain the healthy benefits of the sport we all love!

Let’s Smash the Challenge Together

This challenge provides a fun, easy way for your team to compete against other Mid-Atlantic teams to see how much money you can raise for the USTA Mid-Atlantic Junior Scholarship program. It’s truly a special experience.

“It’s fun sharing something important to me and telling others about its benefits,” said Robin Sanford, the top fundraiser in the 2021 Summer Smash Challenge. “I also love a challenge!”

Since 2018, USTA Mid-Atlantic has awarded scholarships to 179 youth players to help cover expenses related to tennis and keep them playing. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to fund more youth player scholarships and meet the growing needs of players and their families/caregivers.

Thanks to two generous donors, your impact will be doubled with a matching offer up to $5,500! This means we can raise even more this year, maximizing the benefits for our scholarship program with each donation.

Ask your friends and tennis teammates to join your team; you can send them a custom link to sign up on your dashboard. Also, share your fundraising page with friends and family asking them to support you so that more kids can experience the benefits of tennis!

“I set up my page and then emailed it to about 15 people individually, who I thought might be willing to help,” Sanford said. “These were family and friends who I thought would be willing to support my effort and help a good cause, they responded very generously.”

Rising Up for Parks and Recreation

July marks the celebration of Parks and Recreation Month and recognizes how integral of a role public parks play in our own communities. For many individuals, public parks are places for special experiences and making memories to last a lifetime. They are often gathering places for all ages to get involved in nature, celebrate special events, and take on many new adventures and sports like tennis

Having access to parks and recreation is a vital part of an active, thriving community. Many people pick up their tennis racquets for the first time on public tennis courts and subsequently fall in love with the sport. Tennis courts in public parks are spaces that welcome any age, ability, background, and income level to the game of tennis. It is where fun tennis experiences happen, from casual hitting around with friends and family, tennis lessons, camps, USTA League matches, tournaments and more, public parks in the Mid-Atlantic Section are where it is at for tennis! In fact, the 2022 Tennis Participation Survey Summary Report created by the Tennis Industry Association reported that 41% of all tennis participants in the Mid-Atlantic play tennis on courts in public parks.

In addition, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is shining light on how parks and recreation professionals have become public health leaders. “They have expanded programming and worked to fill gaps in access to physical activity, healthy food, chronic disease prevention and management, and social connections, as well as support academic and cultural enrichment opportunities,” said the NRPA.

At USTA Mid-Atlantic we believe that tennis should be accessible to all in every community and public parks play a vital role in making this vision come true. We have compiled a few tips on how you can celebrate parks and recreation month and #RiseUpJuly for tennis in your own community so future tennis players prosper for years to come!

Tip #1 Organize a public park tennis court clean up day

Cleaning up your own community can be fun and easy! Tennis courts can get pretty dirty quickly especially due to the outdoor elements. A blower and a broom can get the job done efficiently making an old court look brand new again! Contact your public park and work with them to organize the tennis court clean up day. There may be certain steps you will have to take and talking with your local parks and recreation department should be the first one. Once you are ready to go, they say teamwork makes the dream work so gather your own team made up of friends, tennis teammates,  neighbors, and/or even your family can get the job done. Giving your local park tennis courts some TLC is one of the best ways to get out there and help restore your own community park tennis courts.

By spreading the word, this can become an even bigger community event bringing together people from all backgrounds creating new social connections in your own backyard. You can also spark interest for others to try tennis when they see a beautiful, spruced up court to play on!

Tip #2 Spread the word about the USTA Mid-Atlantic Facility Restoration Grant

At USTA Mid-Atlantic we believe tennis creates community, character, and well-being. Having high-quality, well-maintained places to play tennis can improve community well-being and provide access to the benefits of tennis among communities that are underserved. We hope to be a helping hand in fostering social connections and uplifting communities by creating a fun environment and place in every community where all are welcome to thrive with tennis.

Through the Facility Restoration Grant, USTA Mid-Atlantic provides up to $10,000 for tennis court construction and refurbishment. Public tennis courts, especially those in parks, schools, and communities are typically the first place where people are seeking the sport. While the application period is closed for this year, we offer the Facility Restoration Grant every year so make sure you’re on the lookout for when the application reopens! Make sure to tell your local park and recreation department about the grant and encourage them to apply. These grants would not be possible without the support from individuals like you donating and showing support for USTA Mid-Atlantic –  a non-profit organization.

Tip #3 Organize your own tennis meetup or tennis social

There are many people who want to get involved with tennis but don’t know where to start or who to contact. All it takes is a few tennis enthusiasts to help grow the sport in your own community! You can organize a tennis meetup among the community to encourage people interested in playing to meet other tennis players, find other interested players, and get to know any community tennis associations, providers, or organizers.  Now this may sound like a daunting task but there are many resources available for you to be successful! Contact your local Parks and Recreation Department and discuss your idea for a tennis meetup or tennis social with them. Once you are ready to move forward, see if you can post a local event listing on their website. You can also ask if you can hang up your own posters at the local park so more people can spread the word.

Looking for more ways to grow the game of tennis? There are many ways you can get involved and leave a lasting impact. Make sure you continue to celebrate and #RiseUpJuly for your local Parks and Recreation Departments by showing your appreciation in any way you can!
